Lincoln Park Zoo Announces Birth of Baby Gorilla Toko

Excitement filled the air at Lincoln Park Zoo this week as staff proudly announced the birth of a healthy western lowland gorilla named Toko. Born to 22-year-old mother Bana and 27-year-old silverback Kwan, Toko arrived in the early hours of the morning, weighing just a few pounds but already displaying strong instincts.

Keepers report that Bana is showing excellent maternal care—cradling Toko close to her chest, grooming the tiny infant, and keeping him well-fed. Observers have noted Kwan’s calm yet protective presence nearby, occasionally approaching to inspect his new offspring with gentle curiosity.

Toko’s birth is particularly significant as western lowland gorillas are critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. The zoo’s primate team works closely with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to ensure the long-term genetic health of the captive population.

Visitors to Lincoln Park Zoo may soon catch glimpses of the new family in the Regenstein Center for African Apes. However, zookeepers emphasize that Bana and Toko’s comfort comes first, and public viewing will be carefully managed.

“This birth is a huge step for gorilla conservation and a joyful moment for our community,” said Maureen Leahy, the zoo’s director of animal care. “Toko represents hope for his species and a reminder of the importance of protecting wildlife everywhere.”
