welecom baby elephant new day

Elephants, the gentle giants of the animal kingdom, have one of the most fascinating and unique birthing processes. A mother elephant carries her baby for an incredibly long pregnancy, lasting about 22 months—the longest of any land mammal. This extended time allows the baby, called a calf, to grow strong and fully developed before entering the world.

When the time of birth arrives, the mother usually separates slightly from the herd but remains close enough for protection. Female relatives, known as “aunties,” often gather around to support her during the process. The birth usually takes place at night or in the early morning, when it is cooler and safer.

The calf, weighing about 100 kilograms at birth, enters the world tail first, which helps prevent suffocation. Immediately after birth, the mother uses her trunk to gently lift, nudge, and encourage her newborn to stand. Within an hour, the calf usually manages to take its first wobbly steps.

The bond between mother and calf is incredibly strong. The little one stays close, depending on her for milk, warmth, and guidance. This touching process shows not only the strength of elephants but also the deep care and family unity within their herds.
